The Decade Project

In the Fall of 2015, Andrea created a recital project focused on the violin and piano music written between 1910-1919, entitled “The Decade Project: 1910,”  In this project, she sought to create a dialogue among compositions in the context of their composers’ lives and their social context. Hosted by the Maybeck Studio for Performing Arts in Berkeley, California, the Decade Project featured two programs of violin and piano music written during this dynamic decade, a decade that saw the co-existence of late romanticism and radically diverse directions in early modernism. She presented works by Sibelius, Satie, Szymanowski, Ives, Elgar, Janacek, Webern, Debussy and Respighi with pianist Miles Graber, and introduced each work with a brief lecture on the composer, and on the context of the particular work.  Looking at the wealth of music created in the decade of 1910 through the narrowed lens of violin and piano music yielded fascinating and sometimes unexpected insights into these particular composers.  After two sold-out programs in Fall of 2015, Andrea expanded the project in 2017 at the Maybeck Studio with an exploration of the violin and piano music of the 1920s, including works by Bela Bartok, Maurice Ravel and Georges Enescu.
